The story of Frau Hitt

FRAU HITT

Mrs Hitt

A giant queen, Mrs Hitt, lived in the mountains above Innsbruck, now grey and rocky. At her time there were green forests, fields and agricultural land. Once her son came home crying. His face and hands were dirty and his clothes were black. He had wanted to break a tree and use it as a horse but the tree was next to a moor (bog), and he fell in together with the tree. Mrs Hitt consoled him, promised him a new dress and called a servant to clean the boy with breadcrumbs. When the servant started to misuse this token of God (the bread), a very heavy thunderstorm came up, and thunder rolled over the mountain. When the storm was over, the corn fields, the green fields, the forests and Mrs Hitt’s dwelling had disappeared, and there was just a desert with broken stones. In the middle, Mrs Hitt was standing – petrified – and will stay there until the end of her days.

Visit at hydropowerplant Kops II

We went inside a cavern that is higher than St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna - inside the mountain. There, waterpower is transformed into electricity by turbines. The water in the reservoirs is pumped back up at night to be reused the next day for peak demand. Most of the electricity produced here is consumed in Germany.

If glaciers continue to retreat, the quantity of water will diminish, and the dammed water will have to be reused again and again.

We visited Lünersee, a dammed lake in the Alps at an altitude of about 2.000m. Huge trout made our fishermen jump for joy, and we saw toads, frogs and black lizards there.
